Allan was feeling guilty about Betty being stuck at home all day to take care of the kids, according to Oxygen. Their affair hadn’t officially started yet — it hadn’t even been proposed — but Allan couldn’t get Candy out of his mind. He couldn’t shake the idea that sex with Candy Montgomery would certainly be more exciting than the sex he was having with his wife. The conversation with Candy planted a seed in Allan’s mind that would eventually bloom into something deadly. Behind closed doors, however, the Gores were miserable. Their sex life had dwindled down to almost nothing, and Betty loathed how often Allan had to travel for work — she couldn’t bear to be left alone.
The Story Of Betty Gore, The Woman Who Was Butchered By Her Best Friend Candy Montgomery
Betty began to slump toward the floor, blood pouring out of her skull, but she continued to struggle to her feet. Terrified by the blood and the certainty that she had just killed her, Candy bolted for the living groom door, but an eternity seemed to pass as she tried to reach it. She finally put her hand on the knob, started to pull—and Betty slammed her body against the door.

Gore let her in and after a brief conversation Gore confronted her about an affair she'd had with her husband Allan, which Montgomery confirmed happened but "a long time ago." She claimed at her trial that she visited the Gore family home to pick up a swimsuit for Gore's daughter Alisa, who was staying with her family for the night. Montgomery killed Gore after striking her 41 times with an ax, 40 of the blows were made while the victim's heart was still beating. Allan was grateful when Betty finally felt well enough to travel, because that meant they could take off a week to show the baby to her anxious Kansas grandparents.

While Richard tried his keys, one by one, on the utility door, Jerry and Lester tried to force open the sliding door again. It was the fifth time the house had been checked that night, but doing it as a group invested the procedure with a seriousness that made them all uncomfortable. If there was something wrong inside, they weren’t sure they wanted to see it. As soon as Jerry told his wife what was happening, she grew frightened and insisted that he not go over there alone.

Candy was not found guilty
Betty would have disagreed and whined, especially when something she wanted was threatened. Sometimes Allan wondered what it would be like to be married to Candy. But then he thought, “No, that was out of the question.” He knew that he’d never divorce Betty, no matter what. The children’s puppet show in the sanctuary was coming to a close when Candy pulled into the parking lot. She caught up with a friend who was going in to join the other women for lunch.

After she was released on bail, Candy stopped reading the newspapers and watching the TV newscasts. But Pat was heartened by the way everyone stood by them, no matter what new evidence was leaked to the press. The church had been overwhelmingly supportive. Scarcely a day went by that they didn’t receive at least half a dozen greeting cards and “Have a nice day” cards and “Thinking of you” cards, some of them awkwardly worded, all of them well intentioned. People who hadn’t written or seen the Montgomerys in years were visiting Hallmark stores all over America, trying to find messages suitable for a family awaiting a murder indictment. Around lunchtime the calls began to dwindle.

As he began to delve into the case, he realized he was going to need help prying the memories of that horrible June day out of Candy. He enlisted the aid of a Houston psychiatrist, Dr. Fred Fason, who was a good-humored, fatherly charmer with a huge nose, bushy eyebrows, and a sweet, intelligent mouth. He called himself a River Oaks shrink; he dealt with a lot of Valium-addled socialites and impotent millionaires. Dr. Fason didn’t mind if people knew that, either; it was the only advertising he had.
Love and Death in Silicon Prairie, Part I: Candy Montgomery’s Affair
Candy had been working as a secretary; she was petite and blond and a little impish, with a thin, pointed nose and a contagious high-pitched laugh. She was an Army brat, the daughter of a radar technician who had spent the twenty years after World War II bouncing with his family from base to base. Candy seemed born to the wandering life, though, blessed with an easy rapport with strangers and a coquettish exuberance that taught her at an early age what power women could exert over men. Allan thought about Candy a lot over the next few days, and he wondered whether she would say anything else the next time they were together.
One thing they talked about was Betty’s pregnancy. Betty was seven months along, and Allan was getting a little apprehensive. Betty would need lots of attention as the day drew closer, because of her problems with the first baby. And it had crossed Allan’s mind that if Betty started having labor pains when he happened to be at the Como, he would never be able to forgive himself. In early June he told Candy he thought they should discontinue the affair for a while so that he could be available for Betty at all times. Allan loved that about Candy; she understood things like that.

There are many ways to approach material and what was challenging in Love & Death was that in the real story, there are many things that have humor. Hopefully, there’s humor and anxiety at the same time, but the reality is that Candy and Allan [Gore, played by Jesse Plemons] talked for months about having their affair. They talked for three months, it’s the most unsexy beginning of any affair ever known. And that was true [and is captured in the beginning episodes]. Yes, Candy Montgomery took a shower in Betty Gore’s house after killing her with an axe.
She grabbed the ax and used it aggressively, pushing the handle against Betty’s legs. Through a window came the hysterical canine sounds, desperate now, the barking and howling of frightened creatures. Candy jerked the ax and then leaned backward with all her might, wrapping both hands around the blade. The handle was covered with blood, and when Betty tried to pull just as hard, as though in a tug-of-war, her hands slipped off and she plunged backward into the room. She lunged toward Candy, but Candy had time to raise the ax and bring it down with all the adrenaline-fueled strength she could gather.
Now Allan was required to have clinical sex with Betty every night during her estimated fertility period, in the name of family planning. He felt a little resentful; he had the distinct feeling that he was being used. That didn’t mean he didn’t love Betty or that he would ever do anything to hurt her.
Once he found a small ceramic statue of a boy and a girl kissing. The inscription on the base read, “Practice Makes Perfect.” As time went on they seemed less like lovers and more like best friends. During one rendezvous, they decided to forgo sex altogether because they wanted to spend lunchtime talking. Candy could even talk to Allan about Pat; he was that understanding.
She loved Allan’s casual phone calls and small kindnesses, and she would miss them. The good news was that she didn’t have to make any more damned picnic lunches. The next morning Allan was still riding the emotional high as he dressed for work. On the drive into Richardson, he tried to shut out all sensations except thoughts of Betty. He wanted to concentrate all his thoughts and feelings on his marriage, which was once again the most important thing in his life.
